Michigan’s population is shrinking. According the U.S. Census Bureau, Michigan is the only state to lose population in the last decade (0.6% decline)
Michigan residents don’t make as much as residents in other states. While our per capita income has been growing below the U.S. average for the past thirty years, the rate of decline has been dramatic over the past ten years. Michigan’s per capita income has fallen to 39th in the nation due to falling GDP over the past decade. Michigan’s per capita income is now roughly 13% below the national average.
If Michigan had grown like a Top Ten state since 2000, we would have 949,510 more jobs and up to $7,654 more for income for every Michigan citizen.
